Visit to the Center for Chinese Studies, Mahidol University

Conducted by Professor Dr. Lee Lai To, Senior Professor and Director of Asian Research Center for International Development (ARCID), School of Social Innovation, Mae Fah Luang University

Upon my arrival at Mahidil University on 6 September, I was received by Ms Wang Wanwan, Executive Public Relations Coordinatior of the Center for Chinese Studies. Professor Tavivat, Chairman of the Center, met with me in his office and we had a productive discussion on how to promote academic cooperation between the Center for Chinese Studies at Mahidol University and the Asian Research Center for International Development (ARCID) at Mae Fah Luang University. I also briefd Professor Tavivat about ARCID and the China Watch Project. In turn, I learned more about the activities of Professor Tavivat's Center. Ms Wang and Professor Tavivat indicated that they would like to get my help in assessing the paper proposals for their international conference on "The Maritime Silk Road and the Overseas Chinese" to be held in October 2018. In principle, I had agreed to do so. Ms Wang also mentioned that she would like to bring a visiting professor from China to call on me at ARCID in the near future.

I gave a lecture on "A Political Analysis of China's Relations with Southeast Asia" in the mrning of 7 September. The audience included not only staff members but also about 25 MA and PhD students. Inerestingly, there were about 10 monks/nuns among the students. They were probably studying Buddhism at the Center.

After the lecture, there were quite a numer of questions from the staff and students. It was good to see that they were interested in and curious about some of the issues related to Sino-Southeast Asian relations.

At the end of the lecture, Professor Tavivat accompanied me for lunch. I reiterated the point that we should work together to form a community of China scholars before I said goodbye to Professor Taviviat, Ms Wang and one other administrator.
